Just Works, And does (almost) anything I could ever ask for

What do you like best about PostHog?

I love that basically anything we could want to know for marketing is either already available from Hour 0 (heatmaps, clickmaps, rageclicks), or 1 click away (session replay). It's great having session replay and event tracking integrated together, makes drilling down deep into anything super simple.

What do you dislike about PostHog?

I wish PostHog had a drop-in error tracking/aggregation solution. PostHog is better than Sentry in every single way but I feel like I need to have both if I want the full picture of my apps quality. The web bundle is also kinda big and un-treeshakable but that's not a huge deal.

What problems is PostHog solving and how is that benefiting you?

drilling deep into convertion funnels, seo/analytics, affordable session replays. Helps us find where users are getting confused/stuck/dropping off

PostHog's user recordings showed us exactly how people use our app. It's been incredibly helpful.

What do you like best about PostHog?

The user recordings feature. It lets us see exactly how people interact with our app, which has been incredibly insightful for our team.

What do you dislike about PostHog?

Sometimes the user interface can be a bit overwhelming with all its features. It took us some time to fully understand how to use everything effectively.

What problems is PostHog solving and how is that benefiting you?

PostHog is solving our challenge of understanding user behavior within our SaaS app. The user recordings feature shows us exactly how people interact with our product, revealing usability issues and user journeys we couldn't see before. This is benefiting us by allowing our team to make more informed decisions about product improvements, ultimately leading to a better user experience.

What do you dislike about PostHog?

At this point there isn't anything I don't like except why I didn't know about it sooner

The price is good and the different way to use the data is a great.

Event types, explained

Events are billed at different rates based on volume and if you choose to send custom user properties with the event.

Anonymous events

Anonymous event example

No individually-identifiable info, analyzed in aggregate, don't use person profiles

By default, events are anonymous, meaning they don't have any personally-identifiable information attached to them.

They come with info about the browser and device, visitor's location, and any UTM parameters.

With anonymous events, you can:

  • See a Google Analytics-style dashboard
  • Access properties like UTMs, location, referrer, page views
  • Create aggregate insights in Product analytics

    • How many times users click an element on a page
    • Group visitors by device type or location
    • Filter to interactions on a specific page
    • Track anonymous users across sessions

Pricing starts at

$0.00005/event

First 1 million events/mo free

Identified events

Identified event example

Track usage of specific, logged in users by using person profiles.

Identify users by their email address or other unique identifier, and attach custom properties to their person profiles.

In addition to anonymous event capabilities, you can:

  • Merge anonymous users with their eventual identified user

    • Like when they sign up for your product or use different devices - enables analyzing the user's path
  • Store custom properties on users

    • Use these properties in cohorts, session replay, experiments, and feature flags
  • Create user-specific insights in Product analytics

    • How many times specific users click an element on a page
    • Group cohorts of users by device type, location, or property
    • Filter to interactions on a specific page by specific users

A note from our co-founder

Our pricing is designed to make you happy

Here's what you should know about our pricing:

  • We make a profit with every product. This means we don’t have loss-leader products that will go up in pricing later or get retired.
  • We aim to be the cheapest for each product at every scale compared to every major competitor. Tell us if we're not! (Note: This doesn't include your buddy's two-person startup.)
  • The company in general has significant revenue, over 60,000 customers, runs default alive, and aims to IPO rather than sell. This means we don’t rely on investors to grow, and we’re stable. Of course we aren’t perfect, but this goes a long way to avoiding the average dumb vc-backed company stuff in general - like running out of money or selling to a lame bigger company who just kills off our products.
  • We have an open source product too - so if you must, you can self host. It is MIT licensed if you want to use it in a big organization that isn’t ready to move to PostHog Cloud yet.

If this makes you happy – like most people - just start here:

When James isn't thinking about how to cut prices (again), you'll likely find him changing a diaper.

Pricing FAQ

  • How do I know what my volume is?

    Tim Glaser

The easiest way is to sign up for the Free plan. You'll get an accurate volume projection after just a few days.

  • Do I pay anything for stored events?

    Simon Fisher

No, you only pay the fee per captured event in a given month (i.e. you only pay when each event is first received). There are no additional costs or fees.

  • How long do you retain data?

    Tiina Turban

Data (except recordings, see below) is guaranteed to be retained for 7 years on any paid plan and 1 year on a free plan. After 1 year, data may be moved into cold storage so queries may run more slowly.

  • How long do you retain recordings?

    Rick Marron

Recordings are kept on Clickhouse-based installations for 1 month. For paid customers on PostHog cloud, recordings are kept for 3 months.

  • What happens after the data retention period elapses?

    Marius Andra

Any event or user data stored for more than the retention period may be permanently deleted from our systems.

  • Is there a free trial on paid plans?

    Michael Matloka

We have a generous free tier on every paid plan so you can try out the features before paying any money (though you will need to enter your credit card info). If you have additional needs, such as enterprise features, please get in touch.

  • What currency are your prices in?

    James Hawkins

All prices are in US Dollars (USD), excluding taxes.

  • Do you offer a discount for non-profits?

    Eric Duong

Yes in most cases - 50% off any plan. Create your account, then email sales@posthog.com from the same email address with some basic details on your organization. We will then apply a discount.

  • Are there any minimums or annual commitments?

    Cameron DeLeone

Nope. We can, however, offer annual commitments (for example, to maintain pricing) if you need them as part of an enterprise agreement.
